Background

BASE-LiNE Earth is an international training, research and career development network for highly motivated young scientists, who are exposed to state-of-the-art research on one hand and to a comprehensive training programme on the other.

Within the framework of BASE-LiNE Earth 15 Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) will contribute to extend the knowledge on the complex and long-term Phanerozoic seawater history by the determination of original proxy information preserved in reliable ancient geological archives using cutting edge technologies and experimental approaches.

BASE-LiNE Earth unites research units and private sector partners with broad and complementary expertise and scientific interests in the field of paleoclimatology, geochemistry and paleoecology. The BASE-LiNE Earth consortium consists of 21 partners coming from eight European countries, as well as partners from Israel and  from Australia and Canada.

research - Data on seawater composition are essential for understanding long-term chemical processes of socio-economic dimension like the evolution of life, land-ocean interaction, atmospheric chemistry, ecosystem adaptation to climate change, oceanic trace metal cycling, and for applied geological processes like the formation of submarine energy resources. BASE-LiNE Earth offers societally important deliverables like time series of past trace element and isotope cycling and models about ocean material fluxes in and out of the Phanerozoic Ocean.

training - Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) will be exposed to academic and non-academic high-tech institutions linking biogeochemical research and training in biology, ecology, geochemistry as well as chemical analytics to engineering and cutting edge analytical instrumentation.

BASE-LiNE Earth offers its ESRs multi- and interdisciplinary environments that will provide them with highly demanded transferable skills. They will be trained according to an individually supervised, comprehensive and complementary programme composed of the individual research projects, methodological courses offered at each partner site, face-to-face network-wide training events offering transferable skill courses, close interaction with scientists on an European but also on a worldwide level.

Moreover, within BASE-LiNE Earth ESRs will be exposed to international secondments activities as an essential part within Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions. By involving partners from the private sector such as Thermofisher, Research Joanneum and DEA Deutsche Erdoel AG) BASE-LiNE Earth illustrates the possibility to transfer knowledge between academia and industry and to get insights to the organisation/management of SMEs and a large company.
